Values: Your Leadership Anchor

One of the first things we do in Co-Active coaching is help clients identify their core values—and there’s a reason we start there. In leadership, especially when the pressure is high and the stakes are real, your values are what keep you steady. They tether you to who you are, what you stand for, and why you said yes in the first place.

Imagine this: you’re leading a series of high-impact virtual trainings for a client. Expectations are sky-high. You’re stretching into new territory, and that little voice of doubt starts whispering—Am I ready for this?

Now imagine you’re grounded in what matters most to you. You know your core values, and you use them to guide your decisions, manage your energy, and keep your purpose in view. Instead of spinning out, you lead with clarity and calm. That’s the power of values. They don’t remove the challenge—but they remind you who you are in the midst of it.

So, What Are Core Values—Really?

Core values aren’t just lofty ideals. They’re the deeply held principles that shape how you lead, connect, and live. They’re personal. They’re rooted in experience. And when they’re clear, they can change everything.

How to Discover Yours

The process of identifying values is both reflective and energizing. Here are a few ways to begin:

Recall Meaningful Moments
Think back to times in your life when you felt fulfilled, proud, or completely aligned. What made those moments matter? The clues to your values live there.

Notice What Lights You Up
What energizes you? What kinds of conversations or work make you feel most alive? That spark is often a sign of a core value being honored.

Pay Attention to Frustration
What drives you nuts? Sometimes, the things that bother us most—like dishonesty, inefficiency, or lack of empathy—point directly to a value we care about deeply.

Values in Action

Once you know your values, you can start using them—daily.
In decision-making, they serve as filters. If “growth” is a core value, you might say yes to the hard thing because you know it will stretch you. If “balance” is a value, you might decline the same opportunity to protect your energy and focus.

In conflict, values help you show up with integrity.
In self-doubt, they help you re-center and remember who you are.

Values are not a one-time exercise. They’re ongoing companions. You revisit them. You live into them. You let them evolve as you grow.

And when you do? Leadership becomes less about proving and more about being. More grounded. More authentic. More powerful.
