The Secret to Great Leadership? Knowing When to Shift Styles
For decades, many organizations have promoted people into leadership roles because they excelled in their field—not necessarily because they knew how to lead. The result? Talented professionals suddenly tasked with managing teams, making big decisions, and setting direction… without much guidance on how to do it well.
Some leaders figure it out quickly. Others stumble. And in today’s fast-moving world—where innovation, technology, and customer expectations are changing daily—leaders are realizing they need more than technical expertise. They need flexibility. They need range.
Over the years, I’ve seen that effective leaders don’t just have one way of leading. In fact, we move in and out of different leadership modes throughout our work and our lives. And while there are many ways to describe them, I’ve found five that truly matter:
Leader Within
This is the foundation for everything else. A Leader Within has self-acceptance, self-authority, and a commitment to act with integrity in alignment with their values. It’s about knowing who you are, what you stand for, and leading from that place—no matter the circumstances.
Leader in Front
This leader holds the vision and inspires others to join it. They don’t need to have all the answers—in fact, they know they shouldn’t. Instead, they gather and amplify the talent around them, creating collaboration and buy-in. When a Leader in Front is at their best, everyone feels like part of the mission.
Leader Behind
Think of this as leadership through coaching. A Leader Behind listens deeply—not just to the words spoken, but to the pauses, the tone, the unsaid truths. They connect the pieces to the bigger picture and quietly empower others to step up. This is where the magic of service happens—behind the scenes, making the vision real.
Leader Beside
This style thrives in authentic partnership. A Leader Beside works with people, moving fluidly between leading and following. They embrace lively debate, spontaneous ideas, and the synergy that comes from working shoulder-to-shoulder toward something that matters.
Leader in the Field
This is leadership in the unknown—where you step into uncharted territory and trust your instincts. A Leader in the Field knows when to act, when to wait, and how to uphold the highest standards even when the path isn’t clear. It’s about courage, adaptability, and presence in real time.
The beauty of these five styles is that they’re not tied to your job title or position. They’re part of who you are. The more you can move fluidly among them, the more agile, resourceful, and impactful you’ll be.
Leadership, at its best, isn’t about power or status—it’s about taking responsibility for how you show up, for yourself and for others. And when you own that, your influence reaches far beyond your role.
Where do you see these five styles showing up in your organization—and where could they be stronger?
