Self-Care – Part 3: Practical Actions for Healthy Leadership
When was the last time you felt stuck? Did you notice that you were using the same method over and over, yet achieving no new results? It’s easy to fall into a repetitive cycle, applying the same strategies and expecting different outcomes. This common trap can e incredibly frustrating and limiting.
So what can you do to break free?
1. Recognize the Loop
The first step in acknowledging that you’re caught in an infinite loop. If you’re consistently hitting a wall, it’s a sign that your current approach isn’t working. Awareness is the key to change.
2. Breathe
When we’re frustrated, we often unconsciously hold our breath, triggering a “fight or flight” response. Pause and take a deep breath to calm your mind and body. Centering yourself can provide the clarity needed to approach the problem differently.
3. Be open
Shift your perspective by exploring new angles. Embrace creativity. Ask yourself: How would your favorite character look at this problem? What would your mom tell you? How would this problem look from your favorite vacation spot?
4. Observe
Fully engage with each new perspective and observe how it makes you feel. Notice the emotions that arise and where you feel them in your body. This self-awareness can guide you towards a more effective solution.
5. Make a Resonant Choice
Choose the perspective that resonates with you the most. From this viewpoint, brainstorm fresh ways to address your problem. Consider how you can respond, react or resolve the situation in a new way.
6. Define the Structure
Decide what actions you’ll take with your new perspective. What will you say “yes” to doing, and what will you say “no” to? Clearly defining your approach will help you stay focused and committed.
7. Commitment.
Make a commitment to yourself regarding the changes you plan to implement. Set a timeframe and hold yourself accountable to follow through.
By applying these steps, you can break the cycle of stagnation and open your mind to new possibilities.
