Presence Speaks Louder Than Words

A few months ago, my mom passed away. Since then, many people have reached out to support and comfort me. Their words of sympathy have been kind and deeply appreciated, yet this experience has also reminded me of something important—sometimes, words aren’t what we need.

As humans, we often feel compelled to fill silence with words—to offer advice, reassurance, or wisdom. But grief, and other deep emotions, don’t always need words. Sometimes, what we need most is simply to sit and be. To feel our emotions fully and to allow ourselves the space to process them without the need for immediate explanation. To have someone nearby—not to talk, not to offer solutions, but simply to be there with us.

There is something powerful about presence. Whether it’s a friend sitting in quiet solidarity or a moment of solitude, these spaces allow us to truly experience and understand the depth of our feelings. They give us room to process our story, reflect, and ultimately decide—in our own time—how we want to move forward.

I am deeply grateful for every kind word, gesture, and act of kindness my family received during this time of loss. Each one was a reminder of the love and support that surrounds us.

Yet, in reflection, I’ve learned something I want to carry forward. When I witness others navigating grief or emotional challenges, instead of rushing to offer words, I will pause and ask:

“Would you like me to just sit with you for a while?”
or
“Would you like to talk about it?”

Because sometimes, presence speaks louder than words.

Wishing you the best as you take your next steps toward having a Professional Edge.
