Passion and Purpose
“The biggest mistake people make in life is not trying to make a living at doing what they most enjoy.”
― Malcolm Forbes, entrepreneur
In the business world there are lots of people that work for the next paycheck or the weekend or their next vacation. They may enjoy their job, but they have a reason for working, not a defining purpose.
The very best leaders I’ve worked with have a purpose that drives them. They believe that what they do has meaning, and, in most cases, it has meaning beyond themselves. But it goes beyond that. The best leaders have a purpose, and they can articulate it. When asked they can tell you exactly WHY they do what they do and WHY, as a result, you should follow them.
“Focus and simplicity: These have been my mantra. The simple may be more difficult than complex. You have to work hard to clarify your ideas to make what you think is simple. But in the end, it’s worth it because once you do, you can move mountains.” Steve Jobs, Apple Founder
The team that followed Steve Jobs knew and understood his purpose. When times got tough – and they always do – Steve and his team knew why they were hanging in there. They understood that it was worth the struggle to get to the finish line.
In my own life, my passion has driven me to focus and clarify my purpose. I love going to “work” every day, because I love what I do. I am fulfilled by the ability to guide others to and through opportunities to find purpose and fulfilment in their own lives, attain their own goals and become the individuals they aspire to be.
There is no magic formula. When times get tough, the tough have a purpose for doing what they do and that keeps them moving forward. Without a purpose, teams flounder with uncertainty, especially in difficult times.
What’s your purpose? Can you articulate it? Do people around you know it?
Your purpose is yours. Define it how you want. Own it. Figure that out and you can do anything you set your mind to. You can achieve beyond what you thought possible. Get your team on board, and you will move mountains together.
Wishing you the best as you take your next steps toward having a Professional Edge.
