Know the Talents of Those Around You

Acknowledging and leveraging the talents of your co-workers is essential for building a productive and effective team dynamic. Often, these talents complement each other, filling in gaps and enhancing overall performance.

For instance, in my experience as a Producer for a theatrical production, I worked alongside a Director whose strengths lay in conceptualizing the big picture. While he had some attention to detail, it was clear that his true talent lay in visionary thinking. Recognizing this, he sought out someone like me, who excelled in detail-oriented tasks, to complement his skills. Together, we formed a successful partnership where our talents complemented each other seamlessly.

Surrounding yourself with individuals whose talents complement yours is key to building a cohesive team. However, it’s important to approach differences in talent with respect and understanding. There may be times when another person’s talents seem to challenge or frustrate you, but it’s crucial to remember that everyone has a right to showcase their strengths.

I once encountered a situation where I initially felt threatened by an employee who possessed similar talents to mine. However, I quickly realized the value of her skills and the potential for collaboration. By respecting her talents and fostering a collaborative environment, we were able to make significant improvements in efficiency within our organization.

In another instance, I encountered a colleague whose talents were perceived as challenging due to her inclination to question the status quo. While her approach may have been unconventional, it ultimately contributed to pushing boundaries and challenging established norms, a concept identified as “challenging the process” by Posner  and Kouzes in the book “The Leadership Challenge”.

The key takeaway is that each individual brings unique strengths to the table. By recognizing and valuing these strengths, we can create a supportive environment where everyone’s talents are utilized to their fullest potential, leading to greater team success.

Wishing you the best as you take your next steps toward having a Professional Edge.
