A Shift in Perspective

When my husband and I go hiking, he often says I’m on a mission to reach the end point rather than enjoying the journey along the way. He’s not entirely wrong. My stride is naturally longer, my pace a bit quicker, and to anyone watching, it may look like I’m racing toward the finish line instead of taking in the beauty around me.

Recently, I was reminded of this while reading a story a friend shared about walking her dog. Dogs, as we know, stop to sniff everything.  As owners, we often want to hurry them along so we can check “walk the dog” off our list and move on to the next task. But for a dog, stopping to sniff is their version of getting a coffee with a friend or window shopping on a sunny afternoon. It’s how they explore, discover, and connect with the world.

What a shift in perspective.

That story made me reflect on how often we do the same thing in our lives and work. We rush through our days, focused on crossing items off our lists, measuring progress by how much we accomplish, rather than by what we discover along the way. We forget that slowing down is not a sign of inefficiency—it’s often where insight, creativity, and genuine connection live.

When we give ourselves permission to pause, to explore without urgency, we begin to see more clearly. We notice what inspires us. We connect more deeply—with others and with ourselves.

So, the next time I’m out on the trail—or even moving through an ordinary workday—I’ll take a page from the dogs’ playbook. I’ll slow down, breathe, and let curiosity lead for a while.

Because sometimes, the best way forward isn’t to move faster—it’s to look closer.

Wishing you the best as you take your next steps toward having a Professional Edge.
