The Space In Between: Where Change Becomes Transformation
We often cling to what’s familiar—even when it no longer serves us. Not because it’s right, or aligned, but because it’s known. And the unknown? That can feel unsettling at best… and paralyzing at worst.
But here’s what I’ve come to believe, both personally and through my work in coaching: Change isn’t the hard part. Transition is.
Change Happens. Transition Is a Choice.
Change is external. It’s the event. The shift. The new role, the new direction, the unexpected turn.
Transition is internal. It’s how we process, interpret, and move through that change.
And that space in between—the messy, unclear, often uncomfortable middle? That’s where the real work happens. That’s where identity gets questioned and old patterns surface. That’s where we’re invited to let go of what was… before we’re fully ready to step into what’s next.
Why We Hold On
Even when something isn’t working, we hold on. To the role; to the expectation; to the version of ourselves that once fit. Because letting go creates a gap. And in that gap, we don’t yet have answers.
From a coaching perspective, this is where awareness becomes everything. Because when we slow down long enough to notice what we’re holding onto, we can begin to ask:
- What am I afraid might happen if I let this go?
- What part of my identity is tied to staying where I am?
- Is this still aligned with who I am becoming… or just who I’ve been?
The Discomfort Is Data
Discomfort – we do our best to avoid it. But what if it’s actually filled with information? What if that tension you feel isn’t a signal to retreat… but an invitation to pay attention? Discomfort often shows up right before clarity and growth.
The questions to ask are:
- Am I trying to escape the discomfort… or understand it?
- What might this feeling be trying to show me?
- Where is there friction—and what could that friction be pointing toward?
Leaning Into the Transition
Here’s the part we don’t talk about enough: You don’t have to have it all figured out to move forward. In fact, most meaningful transitions don’t come with a clear roadmap. They come with questions, uncertainty, and a sense that something is ending… before you can fully see what’s beginning.
This is where coaching becomes powerful.
Not because it gives you the answers—but because it creates space to explore the right questions.
- What would it look like to trust this transition, even without full clarity?
- What strengths have I used in past transitions that I can draw on now?
- What support do I need to move through this—not just get through it?
- If I believed this change was happening for me, not to me… what would shift?
The New Beginning
We like the idea of new beginnings: Fresh starts, clean slates, the next chapter. But we don’t always honor what it takes to get there: the letting go, the uncertainty, the in-between space where nothing feels fully settled. And yet—that’s where transformation lives.
Every closed door isn’t just an ending. It’s a redirection – Toward something more aligned, more intentional. It’s more reflective of who you are now, or maybe… who you’re becoming.
So I’ll Leave You With This
If you find yourself in a season of change, ask yourself:
- Am I resisting this transition—or engaging with it?
- What am I being invited to release?
- What might be possible if I allowed myself to move forward without having all the answers?
And maybe most importantly:
- Who am I becoming through this process?
Change will happen—whether we’re ready or not. But transition — that’s where you get to choose how you show up. So lean into change. Because your next chapter is not waiting on certainty; it’s waiting on you.

Hi, I’m Carla Hale.
I support clients through moments of change—not by giving them a roadmap, but by helping them navigate the space in between.
Together, we explore what you’re being called to release, what’s emerging for you, and how you want to show up in the midst of uncertainty. You don’t have to rush through it.
You don’t have to figure it out alone.
If you’re moving through a season of change and want to approach it with more intention, confidence, and clarity—let’s connect.
