Reflection for the New Year

As we start the new year, you may be thinking about a New Year’s Resolution—perhaps to exercise more, eat healthier, or be more organized. These goals are great, but they often focus purely on doing more.

This year, I challenge you to take a slightly different approach. Instead of rushing to set new goals, let’s start with a moment of intentional reflection. By looking backward before moving forward, we can set intentions that are more meaningful and lead to a more joy-filled life.

Take a moment to pause and reflect on these three questions:

  1. What impact have I made this past year?
Think about the difference you’ve made in your personal and professional circles. It could be a major project you led, or simply the time you spent listening to a friend in need.
  2. What wins from this past year, big or small, do I need to pause and celebrate?
We often dismiss our achievements as we race to the next challenge. Did you learn a new skill? Successfully navigate a difficult situation? Acknowledge these victories. Celebration builds momentum.
  3. What opportunities did I miss to live out my life purpose this past year?
This isn’t about regret, but awareness. If your purpose is to connect with people, did you decline invitations to social gatherings? If it’s to create, did you let your tools gather dust? Identifying these gaps helps us focus our energy moving forward.

After truly reflecting on these questions, I challenge you to consider the next three, which will guide you toward a more purpose-driven and joy-filled year ahead.

  1. What impact do I want to make this year?  Based on the impact I want to make, what is one tangible action I will commit to each week?
  2. How can I integrate my celebration mindset into a regular practice through the coming year?
  3. What is one opportunity I can create this year to actively pursue my life purpose?
