Defining Success: What Does It Mean to You?

What does success mean to you?

This is a question I have asked many of my clients, and the answers are always deeply personal. Surprisingly, success rarely revolves around money—despite what society often tells us. Instead, success is about something much deeper, something uniquely meaningful to each individual.

How Do We Define Success?

Success is not a one-size-fits-all concept. For one person, success might mean raising children who grow into kind, responsible, and productive members of society. For another, it could be about making a positive impact on the people around them. I once had someone tell me, “I will consider my life a success if more people truly understand how to love each other when I leave this world than when I came into it.”

So, how do you define success for yourself?

Finding Success Through Your Values

The answer lies in your personal values. Success is not something the world defines for you—it is something you define for yourself. Your values shape who you are, what matters most to you, and ultimately, what fulfillment looks like in your life.

To begin identifying your own definition of success, ask yourself:

  • Who do I admire? What qualities or actions make this person admirable?
  • What makes me angry? What injustices or wrongs stir a strong emotional response in me?
  • When was I happiest in my life? What circumstances contributed to that happiness?
  • What am I passionate about? What excites and motivates me?
  • When I pass away, what do I want my epitaph to say? What legacy do I want to leave behind?

By reflecting on these questions, you can uncover the values that matter most to you. And once you know what truly matters, you can begin to define what success looks like in your own life.

Living Your Definition of Success

Once you’ve identified your core values, ask yourself: If I accomplish what truly matters to me, will I consider my life a success?

Success is not just a goal—it’s a journey shaped by what you choose to prioritize every day. So, what are you living for? What is your definition of success?
