12 Questions to Combat Burnout: Shifting Your Perspective

Maybe you’re not bad at boundaries; you might just be asking the wrong questions. For the ones who are:  Sending Sunday morning “quick updates”, Eating lunch in meetings three times a week, and/or still thinking about work at midnight.  You don’t need another productivity hack. You need better questions.

Burnout Is More Common Than You Think

In a recent survey, 77% of professionals reported feeling burnout at least once this year. If you’re reading this, chances are you’re one of them. Burnout doesn’t mean you’re failing—it means you’re human. By asking the right questions, you can start turning things around.

Here are 12 questions nobody asks themselves before burnout (but should) and some options for relief:

Questions About Your Current Mindset

  1. Why am I treating exhaustion like a badge of honor?

Check your last five emails. Count how many times you mentioned being busy. Ask yourself why “busy” is your default narrative.

  1. What’s the real cost of saying yes again?

Rate tomorrow’s meetings on a scale of 1 to 5: Do they energize you or drain you? Cancel at least one that doesn’t serve you.

  1. Would I advise my best friend to work like this?

Write down your weekly hours as if you’re telling a friend. Circle anything that makes you wince. Then consider what advice you’d give them.

Questions About Prioritization

  1. Is this actually urgent or just poorly planned?

Create a two-column list: “Actually Due” vs. “Someone Else’s Emergency.” Use it to set realistic priorities.

  1. What boundaries did I ignore last week?

Track every time you work past hours this week. Write down the boundary you wish you had kept and why.

  1. When was the last time I felt truly rested?

Block 30 minutes tomorrow and label it “Unavailable.” Treat it like a client meeting—non-negotiable.

Questions About Boundaries

  1. Am I running toward success or away from guilt?

Label today’s tasks as either G (guilt-driven) or P (purpose-driven). Carve out more time for “P” tomorrow.

  1. What would happen if I just… didn’t?

Choose one optional task today and simply don’t do it. Observe the outcome. Did the world keep turning?

  1. Who am I trying to prove something to?

Name three people whose opinions shape your choices. Reflect on why they hold that power and whether it serves you.

  1. What’s driving my need to always be available?

Turn off notifications for two hours. Write down what you feared missing. Were those fears justified?

Questions About Self-Awareness

  1. How many times have I said “It’s fine” today?

Keep a tally. Replace one “It’s fine” with “Actually, no” and note how it feels.

  1. How much joy am I trading for validation?

Highlight everything that energized you last week. Calculate the percentage of your time spent on those activities and strive to increase it.
